Temporary Skill Shortage Visa (Subclass 482)
This new visa was introduced by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to replace the 457 Visa.
The Temporary Skill Shortage Visa Subclass 482, which permits hiring from talent pools abroad, intends to solve the shortage of skilled workers for firms that are unable to find the right candidates among Australians. It ensures that Australian workers are given preference throughout the process.
Eligibility Criteria
- Be sponsored by a recognised company
- The nomination must be under an approved occupation
This visa can be applied from both inside and outside of Australia.
Any of the following streams will allow you to work in Australia while on this visa:
- Short-Term stream
- the Medium-Term stream
- Labour Agreement stream

- Temporary Activity visa (subclass 408)
- Training visa (subclass 407)
- Skilled Employer Sponsored Visa (Subclass 494)
Application Process

Business Sponsorship
Employer requests to be a sponsor (allow 1 month)
Labour Market Testing
At least 4 weeks must pass since the Employer started the labour market testing.
Employer Nomination
Employer suggests employee (allow 1-2 months)
apply for TSS Visa
Employee submits an application for a TSS visa (allow 1-2 months)
Short-term Stream
If you work in a position that is on the Short-term Skilled Occupation List and have an authorised business sponsor, you may be eligible to apply under this visa stream (STSOL).
Applicants are only to hold one temporary visa as a primary application.
The visa offers you two options to choose from:
2 Years
4 years (in case of International Trade Obligation, if applicable)
The cost for applying for this visa is AUD $1150
If you want to renew this visa, you need to be in Australia to do that
Medium-Term Stream
If a company is willing to sponsor someone for a job on the Regional Occupation List or the Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills List (MLTSSL) (ROL).
You can work in Australia for up to four years with this visa.
The cost for this Visa application is AUD $2400
You can renew this visa as many times as you want
Labour Agreement Stream
You may be able to apply under this stream if an Australian employer who wants to sponsor you has a labour agreement with the Department of Home Affairs.
What is the Eligibility Criteria for the Applicant?
There are a few criteria that the applicant has to meet in order to be eligible for the visa under any of the streams that was mentioned above
Hold a nomination that has been authorised by a sponsor.
Possess the necessary qualifications and/or skills evaluations conducted
Possess a certified proof of your English language skills and meet the language requirements
If you are in Australia at the time the application is submitted, you must have a valid functional visa, subclass 010 (Bridging A), subclass 020 (Bridging B), or subclass 030 (Bridging C).
Meet any additional criteria or standards for your visa application.
Meet the requirements for character and health
Meet the unique specifications of each stream.
You must meet the Genuine Temporary Entrant (GTE) criterion for the Short-term stream.
Eligibility Criteria for the Employer who is nominating:
If you’re an employer, you must comply with these requirements in order to sponsor an international candidate to fill any skilled position:
Should be running a legitimate business in Australia
The business owner should have a standard business sponsorship
The sponsorship costs are AUD $420 for the employer
The sponsorship will be in effect 5 years from the date of the approval
You can propose your employee for one of the approved skilled occupations on the list, such as the MLTSSL or STSOL, but you must:
Present a valid employment work contract
Pay a remuneration that is at least as much as the TSMIT (Temporary Skilled Migration Income Threshold) for the relevant occupation.
Include details about the job’s location and duration in the nomination.
Give evidence of the labour market testing where ever it is required
Pay the complete fees of AUD $330
English proficiency requirements
For the short-term stream, English language proficiency must be at least 5 Bands or equivalent overall, with no less than 4.5 in each module, and at least 5 Bands or equivalent overall, with no less than 5.0 in each module, for the medium-term stream.
Character and Health check
Provide the legitimate medical certifications that you obtained within a year of submitting your application to satisfy the criterion for health.
Submit the police clearance certificate to satisfy the character requirement.
